Why is that crawdad crying?

Location: Portland, OR

At the Portland library (actually the Multnomah Country library) because we are looking up B&Bs in Seattle and Orcas Island, our next two stops on the trip.

Today we went on a walking of downtown, very pretty and clean, in particular when compared to San Francisco. Walked over to see the Portland Building w/ the giant Portlandia statue. Silly us, we were on the wrong side of the building wondering where the statue was, saying "Maybe it's that deer statue in the middle of the road." But then we got to the other side of the building and saw the statue, pretty impressive.

We then walked over to the Oregon History center, a very neat museum in a nice section on the outskirts (?) of the downtown area. My favorite exhibit was the Portland! exhibit w/ a bunch of memorabilia etc. from Portland's recent history. Second favorite was the miniatures of old wagons and carriages, very amazing detail. And the little tools the guy made in order to create the little wagons were cute.

We walked around more and found a gigantic Banana Republic in the shopping area, as well as a mall similar to the Nordstrom mall in SF but w/ a good food court that has an Indian place w/ tandoori.

Then walked over to the grassy area near the river and along the waterfront for a while, then into and out of the Skidmore and Chinatown districts.

Then we went to Powell's, which was gigantic beyond belief. We bought a book on Seattle and I found "Fistful of Gitanes" finally. Which is great. They had a huge selection of clip books, which Mena loved. That's how she judges bookstores.

By this point our feet were getting tired and we needed to book a B&B in Seattle, so we headed to the library to use the free internet access. Great library! We both want a really nice library like this.

After the library we headed to Jake's Famous Crawfish where we had made reservations for 5:30. We both got clam chowder and then Mena got razor clarms, battered & fried, and I got crawfish stuffed with crawdad in a cajun cream sauce. Everything was good but mine had this mini-lobster thing (crawdad?) and it was real and really depressing, and I almost cried because it was a sad little thing, with little claws etc. But oh well, not much I could do--I had to ask the waiter if I was even supposed to try to eat it. And he said yes, and I tried but it didn't really work out. But at least it didn't really look like a real crawdad after I had torn it up with my utensils.

We had key lime pie for dessert, then (very full) walked back to the hotel.
